Colour, Material, Finish: The Brief Your Manufacturer Actually Needs to Get It Right

A Pinterest board, a swatch you liked in a showroom, or "make it feel premium, like Apple" is a mood, not a brief. Your manufacturer can't quote, tool or produce against a feeling. They need a document with exact, checkable specifications, and the gap between what founders hand over and what a factory needs is where most CMF disasters start.

Exact colour references, per component

"Off-white" isn't a colour a factory can match. A real brief specifies Pantone or RAL codes for every distinct colour on the product, called out per component if the product has more than one material or part. A single "brand colour" swatch attached to a multi-part product leaves the factory guessing which parts it actually applies to.

Material callouts, not just categories

"Plastic" isn't a material spec. Which polymer, which grade, and why: ABS, polycarbonate, PP and TPE all behave differently under load, heat and UV exposure, and a factory needs the specific resin grade to quote accurately and order the right feedstock. If cost or lead time might force a substitution, name an approved fallback material up front, not after tooling is already committed.

Finish specification, in the factory's own language

Gloss, matte, soft-touch, textured, brushed, anodised: these words mean different things to different factories unless they're backed by an actual standard. Texture gets specified with a VDI or mould-tex number, gloss level with a measured gloss unit range, soft-touch coatings by product code. "Make it feel nice to hold" is not a spec a tooling engineer can act on.

A physical reference sample, whenever possible

Screens lie about colour and finish more than almost anything else in this process. A physical swatch, a Pantone chip, or a sample part in the target material closes gaps that no amount of written description can, and it's the fastest way to catch a mismatch before a mould gets cut instead of after.

Tolerances for what "close enough" actually means

Colour and finish both have real-world production variance. A brief that doesn't state an acceptable delta-E range for colour matching, or an acceptable gloss variance, leaves the factory's quality team guessing where the line is, which usually means the line gets drawn in the factory's favour, not yours.

The brief is a technical document

Treat the CMF brief as a technical document that sits next to your engineering drawings, not a creative aside. Every vague word in it (off-white, premium-feeling, matte-ish) is a decision you're handing to someone else to make on your behalf, usually whoever finds it cheapest.
