From Sketch to Shelf: What a Full Product Development Process Actually Looks Like
Most founders describe hiring a design studio as "getting the product designed," as if it's one deliverable. It isn't. A product that actually reaches a factory floor without disaster passes through six distinct stages, and almost every blown budget or missed launch date traces back to one of them getting skipped or rushed.
1. Discovery & Brief Alignment
Before anything gets drawn, the real constraints get written down: target price point, manufacturing method, timeline, regulatory requirements, who the product is actually for. Skip this and you get a beautiful concept that costs three times what the business can sell it for, discovered after weeks of work instead of before any of it started.
2. Concept Development
Multiple directions get explored in parallel, not narrowed to one idea too early. CMF direction (colour, material, finish) gets considered from the first sketch here, not bolted on later, because it affects which concepts are even viable to manufacture. This stage is where the product's actual character gets decided.
3. 3D Modelling & Visualisation
The sketch becomes precision CAD: every surface, radius and parting line modelled to real-world tolerances, not approximated for a pretty render. This is the point where a product stops being an idea a founder can describe and becomes a file a factory could actually quote against.
4. Design for Manufacturing
The stage most studios skip, and the one that decides your unit cost, your lead time, and whether your first-article samples pass inspection or bounce back for rework. Wall thickness, draft angles, tooling complexity and material behaviour all get checked against the realities of the actual manufacturing process before anything is locked.
5. Prototyping & Validation
Physical parts, tested against the real world, not just the screen. This is where a mechanism that looked fine in CAD reveals it binds, a fit that looked tight reveals it rattles, a material that looked right reveals it feels cheap in the hand. Cheaper to find out here than after tooling is cut.
6. Production Handover & Support
A finished CAD file isn't a finished handover. The factory needs a full technical package (drawings, tolerances, material and finish specs, assembly notes) and someone available to answer questions during first-article inspection, when the small decisions that actually determine quality get made under time pressure.
